Electric cars as home batteries
A mid-size electric car holds about 60 kWh. That is about twelve times a 5 kWh home battery.
Derived figure: 60 ÷ 5 = 12. Each car's own figure is in the table below.
Some cars can run your appliances in a brownout. This is called V2L. V2L means vehicle-to-load: the car's battery runs household appliances through an adapter.
- Powers a house The maker says it can run home appliances through an adapter.
- 12 V socket only Enough for a phone charger. Not enough for a fridge.
- Not stated · ask the dealer No source we found says either way. Ask before you buy.
We list hybrids as 12 V socket only unless a source says otherwise.
