Wall-mounted home batteries: brownout backup, explained

TL;DR: A wall battery stores energy (from solar or the grid) and runs your house when the power's out. Today's standard is LFP chemistry — safe, long-lived, no cobalt. In the PH market a 5 kWh module runs roughly ₱84,000–126,000. A 10 kWh module runs ₱135,000–203,000. But you also need a hybrid inverter (₱76,000–114,000). That is because a plain grid-tied solar system shuts itself off during a brownout. Yes, really.

The dirty secret of grid-tied solar

The most common misconception in Philippine solar: "I have panels, so I'll have power during brownouts." No. A standard grid-tied inverter is legally required to shut down when the grid goes down (so it doesn't electrocute the linemen fixing the fault). Solar panels + brownout = a dark house with a shiny roof. To ride through outages you need a hybrid inverter plus a battery — that combination can island your house and keep selected circuits alive.

Why everyone says "LFP"

LFP (lithium iron phosphate — LiFePO₄) is the battery chemistry that won the home-storage war. Compared to the lithium in your phone: far more tolerant of heat (relevant in a PH utility room), extremely resistant to thermal runaway (the catching-fire failure mode), no cobalt, and typically rated 4,000–6,000 charge cycles — 10–15 years of daily use. The trade-off is weight, which doesn't matter when it's bolted to a wall.

What the sizes actually mean

Battery capacity is in kWh (kilowatt-hours). One kWh runs a 100-watt fan for 10 hours, or a 1,000-watt microwave for one hour. During a brownout with essentials only:

BatteryFridge + fans + lights + Wi-Fi + phones (~300–400 W avg)Add one inverter aircon (~800 W avg)
5 kWh~10–14 hours~4–5 hours
10 kWh~24+ hours~8–10 hours
15 kWh2+ days~12–15 hours

Rough planning numbers, assuming ~90% usable depth of discharge. Your loads vary; a licensed pro should run a real load audit.

What it costs in the Philippines (2026)

ComponentPH price rangeAs of
5.12 kWh LFP wall module₱84,000–126,000 (brand spread ₱65k–155k)Apr 2026
10.24 kWh LFP₱135,000–203,000Apr 2026
15 kWh class≈₱200,000–300,000 ⚠ extrapolated, no direct listing—
5 kW hybrid inverter₱76,000–114,000Apr 2026

Rule of thumb: a hybrid (battery-ready) system costs roughly 1.2–1.5× an equivalent grid-tied system before the battery itself. If brownouts in your area are rare and short, pure grid-tied + a portable power station for the router and fans is often the smarter first step — you can add the battery later if you chose a hybrid-ready inverter.

Safety, briefly

LFP is the safe end of lithium, but installation still belongs to licensed pros: proper breaker sizing, cable gauge, ventilation, and mounting away from bedrooms and escape routes. ⚠ We could not find a PH-specific residential battery-installation regulation to cite (the Philippine Electrical Code governs the electrical work itself); insurers may have their own requirements — ask yours.
