The later chapter · batteries first

Next step: make your own power. Run the numbers first.

Most solar calculators are sales funnels — they hide their assumptions and overstate savings. Ours shows the math, uses this month's actual utility rates, and admits what it doesn't know.

Why rooftop solar makes sense for many PH homes

Power here is expensive

Metro Manila and Cebu households pay roughly ₱14.8–14.9 per kilowatt-hour (kWh — one hour of a 1,000-watt appliance) as of July 2026. That's among the highest rates in Southeast Asia — which is exactly what makes solar pay back quickly.

The sun does show up

The Philippines gets about 4.7–5.0 "peak sun-hours" a day — the equivalent of full-strength sunshine. A 1 kWp (kilowatt-peak, the rated size of a solar array) system here typically produces 1,200–1,400 kWh a year.

You can sell the excess

Net metering lets systems up to 100 kW export unused energy to the grid for bill credits — but at the utility's blended generation cost (₱6.5–9.3/kWh), not the retail rate. Our calculator is honest about that; many aren't.

Turnkey grid-tied. Published 2026 quotes range ₱34.6k–75k/kWp — sources conflict; default band ₱40k–60k.
Real-world losses (heat, wiring, dust): 0.75–0.85 typical in PH climate.
Daytime usage share; the rest exports at the lower credit rate.
Interconnection study + meter, installer-reported ₱7k–15k.
What this estimate ignores: roof condition, orientation and shading; financing cost; tariff inflation (which works in solar's favor); panel degradation (~0.6%/yr); typhoon insurance; and it assumes your net-metering application is approved.
